Awards
The Junction Creek Stewardship Committee was recognized as a national leader in grassroots environmental restoration and rehabilitation at a gala held for the Canadian Environmental Awards in Montreal in June 2007. Sponsored by National Geographic Magazine and Shell amongst others, the recognition also came with a $2 500 prize. Find out more here.
Restoration Activities:
25 volunteers attended the Junction Creek Fall Clean-up held September 15 in the Regent and McLeod St area. The event was part of the TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up. Approximately 800m of shoreline was thoroughly cleaned!
8 other clean-ups were organized this year and about 100 volunteers participated. The groups involved in the clean-ups were: Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Sudbury, Lasalle Secondary, Sudbury Newbies, Myths and Mirrors Community Arts, St. John School, Canada World Youth, Churchill Public School, and Comité Franco-acti-jeunes from the Centre de Santé Communautaire.
Over 600 trees and shrubs were planted during 4 different tree planting events.
1,000 Brook Trout were released at various locations in New Sudbury in collaboration with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and with help from students from 3 different schools. Find out more here.
Awareness Activities:
424 students from 18 different classes in English school boards and 240 students from 10 different classes in French school boards participated in the Bug Search program.
Presentations were given to schoolchildren at the Heritage Fair (450 students were reached) and at Roots & Shoots Conference - (20 students).
A series of 7Junction Creek Adventures, inspired from the book "Earth Adventures in the Halifax Regions" by Barlow, Warner and Taylor, were completed to engage families, schools and camps in fun and educational activities along the Junction Creek Waterway. These adventures are located in the Flour Mill (from Agnes to Perrault Sts), in Lively (Hillfield Trail), in the West End (from McLoed to Wellington Sts), and in New Sudbury (Twin Forks Park and Rotary Park).

This year we are fortunate to have three staff-persons: Allison Muckle, Coordinator; Carrie Regenstreif, Manager of Special Projects, and Yannick Loranger, Water Stewardship Assistant.
Russ Pollack, masters student at Laurentian University, was instrumental in helping us complete the Storm Pipe Survey in the summer of 2007.
Hundreds of volunteers have participated in our clean-ups, planting and trout release activities.
