Trout Watch

The brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) has been chosen as one of the principal indicators to measure success in the Junction Creek restoration program. On Earth Day 2000 (April 22), two thousand hatchery-raised brook trout were released into a few selected areas of the creek. Since then, many more brook trout have been released into the creek:
2001-2002: 4,500 released.
2005: 2000 released. Their left pectoral fins were clipped (removed). This will make it easy to distinguish the fish from those released in other years and from those that may be spawning in the creek. In the picture above, the left pectoral fin is the one you see nearest to the head of the fish.
2006: 1000 were released at Twin Forks Park.
2007: 1000 were released at Twin Forks Park and other sites in New Sudbury.
If you go fishing in Junction Creek, please catch-and-release, to give the trout a chance to establish a healthy population. If you catch or see a brook trout in Junction Creek, please help by noting whether it is missing the left pectoral fin, the approximate size, where you found it and any other information you think is important. Then e-mail the info to us!
